I Am The Messenger Blog #1 (Luis Rodriguez)

Ed doesn't know much about them before the robbery. He is able to describe them physically, but until after he receives the playing card is when he realizes things about them. He realizes that it couldn't have been either of them to plan out such a joke. He also realizes that they aren't very intuitive or supportive. They right away dismiss the idea of looking into what the card is about, showing no interest in Ed's dilemmas. This directly affects how Ed thinks of them, thinking twice before going to them for advice. When they finally ask about the card again, he acts like he doesn't remember and when they insist he goes even further into a lie by telling them that he through it out, something that Audrey doesn't completely buy. I guess I can relate to this situation because sometimes if I'm feeling down and people ask me what's wrong I'll act like nothing is wrong and some believe me but there are always those few people that can tell and insist on telling what's wrong or try to help.

Ed's family is pretty dysfunctional. His father is dead, his mother is very hateful, and his older brother is pretty much perfect compared to him. I think maybe after the robbery and after Ed becomes more assertive instead of submissive, he'll be respected even further and shall be able to win Audrey over as well as get his mom to stop offending him. Compared to his friends, it seems that they don't care as much for Ed.

I think The Doorman is an important element to the story because it ties Ed to his father and seems to be Ed's "guide" at times. He also keeps Ed company when no one else does. He even takes The Doorman to the cemetery with him. It seems to me that The Doorman play a huge role in Ed's life.
